How do you know when it’s time to replace your air conditioner or furnace?
There are several factors that contribute to a system failing to work towards the end of its life. Below are a few of them.
Age of your units
If your home comfort system is more than twelve years old you may need to consider replacing them soon. One very important reason is because of the efficiency changes that air conditioner and furnace manufacturers have made over the years. By choosing an Energy Star model you can potentially lower your utility bills by twenty percent or more while reducing your carbon footprint. Modern systems are much more efficient and quieter than ever.
Air conditioner uses R-22 Freon
Freon is being phased out by the federal government in order to conserve energy nationwide. As a result, the cost of Freon has been rising exponentially over the last few years. If your air conditioner uses Freon, you will have to replace it eventually in order to switch over to the new refrigerant (R410A). If you’re having to refill Freon in your condenser every summer you likely have a leak somewhere which can be difficult and expensive to detect and repair. Talk to one of our HVAC technicians or schedule a free in-home estimate for a whole system replacement.
We all know how quickly dust and debris can accumulate in our home. We see it on our ceiling fans, mirrors, and TV’s. What we don’t see is the build up behind your vents, inside of your condenser and inside of your duct work. Many people think regular maintenance is only for older air conditioners and furnaces. We disagree. Regular HVAC maintenance will extend the life span of your units. Replacement may not be needed for units up to 12+ years if you taken good care of the one you have.
Quality of Original Install
We have found that homes often come with the cheapest equipment that has not been properly installed. If you feel like there are problems with your unit because it is not cooling or heating all parts of the home, your system may be undersized for your home. In this case, your air conditioner and furnace are working extra hard to cool/heat your home, which can shorten its lifespan.
If some of these issues sound familiar and you are either dealing with a failing system or one that is non-operational please contact us. We will provide you with a no charge, in-home estimate. Our trusted Comfort Advisors will carefully evaluate your current home system and make an honest recommendation for future replacement.
