About Clayton, CA
Clayton is located in Contra Costra County, just below Mt. Diablo Mountain. The city has over 10,000 residents and was named by a coin toss between two men who each wanted to name the town after themselves. Joel Clayton won the flip and the town became known as Clayton.
The public schools in the area are highly rated and include; Highlands Elementary School, Mt.Diablo Elementary School, Pine Hollow Middle School, Diablo View Middle School and Clayton Valley High School. There is also a public library.
Clayton nestles up to Mt. Diablo State Park, which features hiking trails, camping, attractive rock formations, biking trails and horseback riding. This is a large state park and it attracts many outdoor enthusiasts from several surrounding cities and towns.
The Oakhurst Country Club boasts a very well maintained golf course that was rated among the top four golf courses in the Northern California area by Golf World magazine.
Clayton generally has mild winters and hot, dry summers. The area can see rainfall during the months of November through March, and in 2009 the area saw snowfall for the first time since the 1970s. The climate is perfect for cultivation of trees and plants and is favorable for outdoor activities the majority of the year.
