How do you know when it’s time to replace your air conditioner?
There are several factors that contribute to an air-conditioner failing to work towards the end of it’s life. Below are a few of them.
Age of your air conditioner
If your AC Unit is more than ten years old you may need to consider replacing it soon. One very important reason is because of the efficiency changes that Air Conditioner manufacturers have made over the years. By choosing an Energy Star model you can potentially lower your utility bills by twenty percent or more while reducing your carbon footprint. Modern air conditioners are much more efficient and quieter than ever.
Air conditioner uses R 22 Freon
Freon is being phased out by the federal government in order to conserve energy nationwide. As a result, the cost of Freon has been rising exponentially over the last few years. If your air conditioner uses Freon, you will have to replace it eventually in order to switch over to the new refrigerant (R410A). If you’re having to refill Freon in your AC every summer you likely have a leak somewhere which can be difficult and expensive to detect and repair. We all know how quickly dust and debris can accumulate in our home. We see it on our ceiling fans, mirrors, and TV’s. What we don’t see is the build up behind your AC vents, inside of your condenser and inside of your duct work. Many people think regular maintenance is only for older air conditioners. We disagree. Regular maintenance will extend the life span of your AC unit. Air Conditioner Replacement may not be needed for units up to 15+ years if you taken good care of the one you have.
Quality of original install
We have found that track homes often come with the cheapest equipment that has not been properly installed. If you feel like there are problems with your AC unit because it is not cooling all parts of the home, your AC unit may be undersized for your home. In this case, your air conditioner is working extra hard to cool your home, which can shorten its lifespan.
